剧场，有时又称剧院，意指特定的、由永久性的建筑体构成的表演场所，亦可作为表演场所的总称。剧院通常指室内的表演场所，而剧场则同时适用于户外广场及室内建筑。
概述
剧场中文里本无剧场一词，系近代学者为翻译西方著作，借用日文的日制汉语而来，用以对应英文的theatre（或作theater）一字；theatre一字原为theatron，乃是古希腊剧场的阶梯观众席区域，意为“看的场所”，后来转变为整个表演场所的意思。
剧场的基本要素就是表演处与观看处，即舞台与观众席。有些古代的剧场属于露天建筑，但现代的剧场以室内建筑为多。观众席、大厅、售票口等观众可以进入的区域称为前台。而以舞台为中心，所有表演者及剧场技术部门工作、休息的空间称为后台；广义的后台与前台相对，包含舞台区域以及控制室；狭义的后台意为舞台后方，指观众在演出期间所不会看到的舞台工作区域，例如舞台两侧、演员休息室等。
