巴利语是记录南传佛教「三藏圣典」所用的语言。「南传佛教」是指现在流行于斯里兰卡（锡兰）、缅甸、泰国、高棉、寮国等南亚国家的 佛教。Pāli一词，本来并不指「语言」，而是指南传佛教的「圣典」（经律论三藏），是用来跟圣典的「注释」（Attha-kathā）相对的。这种语言 叫做「巴利语」，是十二世纪以后的事。此前，依上座部传统，它一直称为「摩揭陀语」（Magadhi），或「根本语」（Mūla-Bhāsā）。後来由于 南传佛教各国间常进行文化交流，不同语系的各国比丘间，自然而然以这种记录圣典的语言来沟通，于是就称它作「圣典（Pāli）语」，即「巴利语」。
