由两个以上的构件通过活动联接以实现规定运动的组合件，是机构学的研究对象。构件是机构中的运动单元。两个有相对运动的构件间的活动联接称为运动副。其中以点或线接触的运动副称为高副，作面接触的运动副称为低副。机构中总有一个构件作为机架。多数机构都具有一个接受外界已知运动或动力的构件,即主动件,但有的机构需要有两个以上的主动件。其余被迫作强制运动的构件称为从动件，其中作为输出的从动件将实现规定的运动。若机构用来作功（如牛头刨床），或完成机械能与其他能之间的转换（如内燃机），机构就成为机器，所以机器主要是由机构组成的。 分析机构运动时，应先画出机构运动简图。图中构件和运动副都用规定的线条和符号表示，运动副之间的长度按比例画出，故简图能正确反映原机构的运动情况。机构综合的最终任务也是确定机构运动简图。机构需要由外界输入的独立运动的参数数目,称为机构自由度。机构的主动件数目应等于机构自由度数，这...
