蝗虫俗称「蚱蜢」，台语称之为「草螟仔」。它们的生活史是卵 e 若虫 e 成虫，属不完全变态。具咀嚼式口器，为植食性昆虫。大部分不太挑食，在野外草丛中，常看到它正一口一口的啃食禾本科植物的叶片，它的触角没有螽斯那么长，呈短鞭状，但拥有强而有力的后腿，可利用弹跳来避开天敌。有时可看到两只蝗虫雄上雌下的结婚画面。
