Usage Note :

You can use place or, more often, seat to refer to somewhere where someone can sit. There was only one seat free on the train. More generally, you can refer to a space which someone or something can occupy. He was clearing a space for her to lie down. You do not use place as an uncount noun to refer to an open or empty area. You should use room or space instead. Room is more likely to be used when you are talking about space inside an enclosed area. There's not enough room in the bathroom for both of us… Leave plenty of space between you and the car in front.
